A 26-second look at designing a gym in 3D Gym Planner: draw the room, place real equipment to scale and walk through the result.

A gym layout is a spacing problem long before it is a shopping problem. A rack that looks compact on a product page can swallow a third of a garage once you add the barbell, the plate-loading room on each side and the space you need to step back from a squat.

A layout planner shows you that on a to-scale floor plan, so you find out on screen rather than after the delivery. Place the pieces, move them around, and keep the arrangement that actually leaves room to train.

Clearance rules of thumb for a gym floor plan

Rough numbers to plan around. The planner flags overlaps automatically, but these tell you what to aim for.

WhatPlan forWhy
Walkway between equipmentAbout 3 ft (90 cm)Enough to move and carry plates without turning sideways.
Barbell station width10 ft or moreA 7 ft bar plus space at each end to load and unload plates.
Behind a squat rack3 ft or moreRoom to walk the bar out and step back safely.
Ceiling for pull-upsAbout 8 ftHang and clear the bar; lower ceilings need a different setup.

Machine access2–3 ft on the entry sideYou need to get on and off the seat without climbing over it.

What a good gym layout planner checks for you

Real dimensions are the whole point. Every piece in the catalogue is sized to the manufacturer's published footprint, so a 6-foot bench is six feet and a power rack takes the floor it really takes, not a generic block.

Beyond size, the planner tracks collisions between pieces and with walls, doors and windows, shows clearance zones around the equipment you select, and adds up the cost of the build as you go. That last part is what turns a nice picture into a plan you can buy from.

Home gym, garage gym or commercial floor

The same tool covers a closet-sized corner, a two-car garage and a small commercial or studio floor. Home users usually care most about fit and ceiling height; commercial layouts care about flow, machine spacing and how many stations the room really holds.

If you are laying out a space for members rather than for yourself, plan walkways first and equipment second, then use the 3D walkthrough to check sightlines and circulation.

Start from a template or from nothing

Not sure where to begin? Pick a starter template, such as a compact power-rack setup or a full garage build, and the planner fits it to your room's dimensions. Then swap pieces in and out until it matches how you train.

How it works

  1. Draw the room — Enter the walls, ceiling height and any doors, windows or obstacles. Start from a template or a blank rectangle — L-shaped and custom rooms work too.
  2. Place real equipment — Drag racks, benches, machines and flooring from a catalogue of 250+ pieces, each built to its published width, depth and height. Overlaps and clearance problems light up as you place.
  3. Walk through it — Orbit the 3D view or walk it in first person, check the budget, then save or share the link. All free, in the browser, no install.

Questions

Is the gym layout planner really free?

Yes. You can draw a room, place equipment, check the budget and share a link without paying or making an account. Nothing installs; it runs in the browser.

Can I plan a commercial gym layout with it?

Yes. Rooms can be any rectangle or custom polygon, and the catalogue includes commercial selectorized machines and racks as well as home-gym gear. Use it to test station counts and walkway widths.

How accurate are the equipment sizes?

Each piece uses the width, depth and height the manufacturer publishes for that model, and the planner uses those same numbers for collision checking. Always confirm against the current product page before ordering.

Does it work on my phone?

You can view and adjust a layout on mobile. For detailed placement work a laptop or tablet is more comfortable, and your projects sync between devices when you are signed in.

Can someone design the layout for me?

Yes. Use the Get expert help button and send us your space, goals and budget; we build the 3D layout and equipment list for you.
